Glacier Seminar
USGS Maps: Provided
Rate: $120/person*

Some wilderness travelers may find that despite a good deal of prior backpacking experience, certain challenges such as river and glacier crossings can be a bit intimidating. If you are interested in a route that includes such crossings but prefer to travel as an unguided group, our glacier seminar can give you just the experience and confidence you need to head out on your own.

An experienced guide will take you out on to the Root Glacier for a hike on the ice that will be not only educational but a lot of fun.

Topics to be covered include:

Glacier Travel
  Proper fitting of crampons
  Walking on crampons
Entering and exiting a glacier safely
Evaluating a glacier on a map
  Dealing with crevasses
  Melt streams and mulans
  Encountering snow on the ice

Stream Crossings
  Selecting a crossing site
  Evaluating a stream
  Crossing as a team
  Solo crossings
  Footwear options
If you go for a swim...

Your guide will also discuss and demonstrate safe methods for making stream and river crossings. Gaining the confidence and experience to meet the challenges of glacier and river crossings will allow greater freedom in selecting a backcountry route.

* Lunch provided
