The Air We Share

Growing our carbon offset program together

Flying over the Wrangells, it’s easy to see how connected everything is. The mountains stretch in endless chains, glaciers carve steadily through the valleys of the mountains, and rivers flow from them all. Each mountain, valley, glacier, and river is part of the same system, and we get to fly through it all, but it is important to remember that we are a part of that system too.

This is home for us — Wrangell–St. Elias National Park, where we’ve been flying for over 30 years. It’s one of the last truly wild places left, and every day we’re reminded how fragile that wildness is. Flying gives people access to extraordinary and unnameable experiences. It also carries a cost of carbon emissions, and so we want to give back to the wilderness that gives so much to us all.

Our carbon offset program is one way we try to hold up our end of the system. This year we reached out to our travel agent partners and invited them to join our program. The companies that joined in made the choice to offset all their flights with us in 2025. We had hoped to see an increase in donations. What we got was genuine enthusiasm and support and a major leap towards our goal! In comparison to 2024 we saw a -

  • 248% increase in online donations

  • 160% increase in number of passengers offset

  • 135% increase in number of unique reservations donating

A total of 432 bookings and 1,512 passengers donated to offset their flights this year — raising $2,892.36, which Wrangell Mountain Air matched to bring the total to $4,392.36 for Cool Effect projects around the world.

The growth wasn’t just in numbers, but in community. By including our travel partners, we brought hundreds of new people into the circle of responsibility. What used to be a conversation between us and a few passengers has become a shared effort across companies, countries, and continents.

It’s easy to think conservation belongs to someone else. But it doesn’t. The glaciers, the mountains, the rivers, and valleys - These places are here for everyone to experience, and with that privilege comes responsibility. We’re grateful to see more people stepping in, becoming aware, and sharing in the work it takes to protect this land. True stewardship works when it’s shared.

We’re grateful to all those who donated this season, but we are especially grateful to our partners for the difference they made this year:

This partnership reminded us that protecting Alaska’s wild places isn’t something any one of us can do alone. It takes planning, creativity, and a willingness to try something new. Most of all, it takes a community that cares. Thank you to all those in our community. Each donation, each thoughtful choice, they all matter. When we act together, even small efforts ripple outward, shaping the future of these wild places.
