Providing access to wilderness and carbon offsetting

We at Wrangell Mountain Air consider ourselves very fortunate to share these amazing glacial surroundings with our passengers. At the same time, we’re quite aware that the aircraft so necessary to this task do contribute to climate change - and environmental shifts we see as we fly through the Alaskan wilderness.

As a company, we seek and contribute to projects which help offset the carbon dioxide that our airplanes produce. Our goal is to be carbon neutral in our air operations. If you wish to join us in this mission, we gladly match passengers‘ collective contributions up to $1,500, each year.

Where does the money go?

We partner with Cool Effect, a well-regarded non-profit, to offset our carbon emissions. This group combines science, expertise, and transparency as they scour the globe to find the best projects that measurably reduce greenhouse gases. Cool Effect works closely with project developers to ensure that each project is stable, sound, and capable of doing good for people and the planet. In 2023, we were pleased to join in with a project that installs biodigesters in rural Indian homes that convert decaying poo into clean methane gas for cooking and replaces inefficient wood-burning stoves; you can read about the project here. As a company that links people and the earth together, we were tickled to help fund a project that positively impacts the environment and improves people’s quality of life. Thank you to all who supported this effort this summer!

What kind of projects are funded with my donation?

Carbon credit projects are based on the principles of widely accepted mechanisms for reducing emissions. There are various methodologies for reducing emissions including providing clean cookstoves, preserving forests or grasslands, capturing methane, or running small-scale renewable energy projects.

How can I participate?

You can buy in with us in one of three ways:
1. Click the box that reads “Offset the carbon footprint of your flight“ when reserving your flight.
2. Add it to your flight transaction when checking out on the iPad.
3. Alternatively, you may put cash in the “carbon credit" jar - tip jar style. All of this money also makes its way to Cool Effect.

How much should I buy?

It takes just a few extra dollars to offset the carbon burned in one flight: approximately $1.75/hour in our Cessna aircraft and $2.75/hour in the DeHavilland Beaver. To make a larger impact, Wrangell Mountain Air annually matches our passengers’ collective contributions up to $1,500. We hope you will join us in aiming for a carbon-neutral footprint in the sky this summer!
