Meet us at the Chitina Airport and take a spectacular flight through Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. See the major peaks of both the Wrangell and St. Elias mountain ranges, Kennicott, Root and Gates Glaciers, Stairway Icefall, Erie Mine, Kennicott and McCarthy.
Join your guide on Main Street in Kennicott for a half day hike on the Root Glacier with sack lunch included. A moderate hike takes you to the Root Glacier where you will strap on crampons and step onto a undulating blue river of ice. Along the way your guide will explain the natural history of the area, including wildflowers, geology and the effects glaciers have had upon the landscape. Strap on your crampons and take your first steps onto the otherworldly terrain of an Alaskan glacier. Hike out across the ice as far as you can, discovering the many different features on the surface of the glacier: crevasses, moulons and perhaps even an ice cave. The color and beauty of these features will astound you.
As a less strenuous option we offer a Kennicott History Tour which includes a 2.5 hour guided tour of Kennicott and lunch at Kennicott Glacier Lodge and van transfers.
Hop the shuttle to the frontier town of McCarthy to visit the local museum and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of an Alaskan bush community. Explore the historic town built in the early part of the century. Enjoy the scenic flight back departing at 5:00 pm.
